Race Schedule

Back after a successful run in 2008, the MN Fixed Gear Classic brings world-class track cycling to the NSC Velodrome for three days in June.  This thrilling event kicks off the 2011 Nature Valley Bicycle Festival – the Midwest’s largest celebration of cycling.

The MN Fixed Gear Classic pits professional and elite amateur track cyclists in fast-paced sprint and grueling endurance events.  During the 2008 MN Fixed Gear Classic, Italian sprint superstar Roberto Chiappa thrilled the crowd, shattering an NSC Velodrome 200m TT record. US National Champion Cari Higgins, Junior National Champion Colleen Hayduk and Masters National Champion James Tainter all tested their strength against the best track racers in the US.

The 2011 MN Fixed Gear Classic will feature a unique dual omnium program that showcases separate competitions for sprinters and endurance specialists.  Cross-over races will bring sprinters and distance racers together in search of omnium points.

EVENT DESCRIPTIONS

Super Sprint Qualifying / Miss & Out Final

A Super Sprint is a medley of a miss & out and a 6-lap scratch race. For the miss & out start, the last placed rider is pulled every two laps, down to a predetermined field size. For the scratch race finish, all but the last placed rider qualifies to race the Miss & Out Final later in the program. For the Miss & Out Final, the last placed rider is pulled every two laps, down to the final two riders.

Madison Kilo

This is a flying 1000m (4 lap) time-trial with 2 madison exchanges for a team of 2 riders. Each team enters the track on the back-straight and starts their lead-out. When the team reaches the home-straight for the first time, the start/finish lap counter shows 6 laps to go. When the team enters the home-straight with the start/finish lap counter showing 4 laps to go, the bell is ringing, and the team executes their first madison exchange along the home-straight rail. Timing starts when the rider just thrown into the race crosses the start/finish line. When the racing rider reaches the relief rider (at roughly 2 laps to go), they execute their second madison exchange, and the rider thrown into the race at this point finishes the 1000m time trial at the start/finish line.

Track Stand Competition (no entry fee…..go ahead it’s fun!)

This event is open to any rider. The Fixed Gear Classic race permit does not cover this event. All riders must have a current NSC Velodrome release form signed and on file with the track director. A fixed gear bicycle with no brakes and a helmet are required.

Riders will start from the home straight rail and will be given 1 minute to ride around the track once and stop between a cone at the entrance to the home straight and the start finish line. Once the trackstand begins, the blue apron is out of bounds. Riders may use the blue apron to gain entrance to the home straight but may not use it to trackstand. After a predetermined amount of time has lapsed, the official will fire a gun to signal the finish. Of the remaining riders still trackstanding, the first to cross the finish line is declared the winner.

Further rules:

  • »  Riders may not ride the wrong direction on the track.
  • »  Riders may not advance on the blue apron except to enter the track stand area.
  • »  Riders may not touch the track railing or surface.
  • »  Riders or their bicycles may not touch each other.
