MINNEAPOLIS – June 9, 2008 - The MN Fixed Gear Classic celebrated its inaugural year at the National Sports Center Velodrome June 7 and 8. The prelude to the Great River Energy Bicycle Festival, the MN Fixed Gear Classic included a field of 20 women and 25 men, including 41-time Italian National Champion, Roberto Chiappa.
The international race field again squared off in front of a captive audience of local bicycle racing fans. Overall Omnium Championships for the men went to Emile Abraham, a native of Trinidad-Tobago, who held and maintained a slight points lead going into the final day of racing over sprinter Ben Barczewski of Allentown, Penn., and world champion Italian sprinter Roberto Chiappa. On the first evening of the event, Chiappa set two new NSC Velodrome track records. Abraham, who is also a road racer for Team Type 1 road race team, will compete in the Nature Valley Grand Prix June 11-15 in Minnesota.
The women’s omnium was closely fought between 17-year-old Colleen Hayduke, America’s Dairyland racer Carrie Higgins and Broadmark’s Jennifer Triplett. Coming into the day, Higgins held a lead of just eight points over Hayduk. In the first race of the day, the women’s handicap, Higgins teammate, Australian Claire Vohopoulous took first with Hayduk edging five points closer to Higgins with a second place finish. Higgins crashed in the women’s second race of the day and Hayduk won the race, leapfrogging into first with a four point lead. The heavily bandaged Higgins showed grit coming from behind and placing second in the following race, setting the stage for the final event of the afternoon, the women’s 12k race. In a tough race, Jennifer Triplett won and Hayduk finished second, giving her the Fixed Gear Classic women’s championship.
The bicycle racing attention now turns to the Nature Valley Grand Prix professional stage race, which begins Wednesday, June 11, in St. Paul, Minn. The five-day, six stage race finishes on Sunday in Stillwater, Minn.
