VELODROME

What Are You Doing Thursday Night?

Thursday nights this summer feature the fastest cycling in Minnesota at the National Sports Center Velodrome. The spectacular 43 degree banked wooden oval provides one of the fastest venues for track cycling in the US.

Every Thursday from May 17 through September 13 the riders will hit the boards in a program consisting of 12 races for four different divisions of riders from entry level men and women up to the elite category one racers. This is action not to be missed as cyclists compete in races from 10 laps to 80 laps in length. From the nerve racking Miss and Out races to the thrill and excitement of the motorcycle paced Keirin there is plenty interesting racing to see. Seven nights this season will feature the mad frenzy of the ever popular team races or Madisons. With up to 20 riders on the track at once it’s “like NASCAR with pedals”.

The NSC Velodrome offers an intimate setting in which to witness the speed and excitement of track cycling. Four times each evening spectators have a chance to win gift certificates to local restaurants by picking the winner of designated races. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the sport in person. Bring the whole family for a summer evening of fun and excitement. Racing begins at 7:00PM each Thursday evening and runs until approximately 9:30PM. Admission is free (a $2.00 donation is encouraged).

About the Velodrome

This unique sports facility brings the spectacular sport of track cycling to Minnesota. Of the twenty bicycle tracks in the country, the NSC Velodrome is one of the fastest venues for track cycling in the US. Built in 1990 by noted track builder Ralph Schurman of Munster Germany, the velodrome is made of African hardwoods with turns banked at 43 degrees to guide the racing cyclists around the 250 meter oval at speeds up to 43 miles per hour. The velodrome has hosted numerous national and international contests over the years including the Master’s World Cup, the Olympic Trials, National Championships and EDS Cups.

The NSC runs a summer racing series on the velodrome as well as development programs for the aspiring racing cyclist.
