Session One

Using “new” media to promote your event

Barclay Kruse - NSC Chief Communications Officer

New media surrounds our lives. Blogs, webcasting, photo galleries, audio interviews and videos can all support your event. You will gain the skills and knowledge to use these tools to your advantage. This session will also cover the costs and budgets of using these new media tools. You must attend this presentation before signing up for the NSC - Kick TV video practicum session on Monday.

 

Session Two

Creating added value
Teri Vogt – Schwan’s USA CUP Tournament Director/Land Sports Director

This session will teach you different tournament elements to offer to your customers. Go beyond the basics in order to make your tournament even better. Free giveaways, varied activities, festivals, decorations, internet access, and webcasting can all help differentiate your event from others.

 

Session Three

1:00 pm

How to leverage money and create smart partnerships
Paul Erickson – Executive Director of the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission and the National Sports Center Foundation

Learn how to strengthen your sports events or facilities through three different strategic partnerships:

  • »  Sponsors – how  to attract different companies to your sport event
  • »  Creating partnerships with sports associations
  • »  Creating partnerships with local, state and county governments

Monday, July 14, 2008

Session One

9:00 am

NSC/Kick TV - How to create your own TV program, video production (practicum session)
Barclay Kruse – 15 minutes intro
Taylor Kruse & Greg Hutton – video producers

Join the crew of Schwan’s USA CUP video production team to plan, write, and shoot an episode. You will take part in the Schwan’s USA CUP daily media staff meeting, where articles for the NSC CUP Newspaper and stories for Kick TV are planned. You will be divided into two groups – Kick TV & USA CUP DVD – to produce videos, conduct interviews, choose stories and observe editing. Attendance is limited to six people and you must have attended the ‘New Media’ session on Sunday. This session will last until approximately 2:00pm.

 

Session Two

10:30 am

Sponsorship Dollars – Is there still money available?
Paul Erickson – Executive Director of the Minnesota                Amateur Sports Commission and the National Sports    Center Foundation & John Connelly – Director of Sales and Development

Learn to develop a list of good prospects for sponsorships (possible candidate and identification) and master the trends in event sponsorship marketing. We will also cover how to customize your presentations, use different communication strategies to improve relationships and also look at creative opportunities and ideas for interactions with the customer.

 

Session Three

2:30 pm

How to cut expense without raising revenue
Roger Stawski – NSC Chief Financial Officer

Creative financial planning can help you ensure a successful tournament. We will cover the used of volunteers, fund raising, sponsorships and efficient use of technology. There will be an emphasis on realistic budget forecasting and planning.  

 

Session Four

6 pm - 8 pm

Pulling off an event with 12,000 participants; USA CUP Opening Ceremonies (backstage tour and training - walking class)
John Connelly / Teri Vogt - Hands on Experience

Learn about what goes into organizing an event for 12,000 people – the Schwan’s USA CUP Opening Ceremonies. Massive events with a large number of people in one space are unique. We’ll cover how to coordinate logistics, security, staging, music, parade of athletes, hosting media coverage and webcasting.

Steve Olson – NSC Chief Operating Officer & Paul Erickson - Executive Director of the Minnesota Amateur Sports Commission and the National Sports Center Foundation

Learn how to plan and operate amateur sports facilities – staffing, maintenance and operations, programming options and revenue-enhancement opportunities. Economies-of-scale and measurement tools will be provided as well. A major part of the workshop will address the political environments on public boards and how to create partnerships with government organizations that may have a low interest in amateur sports.

Join the crew of Schwan’s USA CUP video production team to plan, write, and shoot an episode. You will take part in the NSC media staff meeting, which will focus on the choice of articles for the NSC CUP Newspaper and stories for Kick TV. You will be divided into two groups – Kick TV & USA CUP DVD – to produce videos, conduct interviews, choose stories and observe editing. Attendance is limited to 6 people and you must have attended the ‘New Media’ session on Sunday. This session will last until approximately 2:00pm.

Programming a 600-acre facility – Golf, Hockey & Land Sports
Pete Carlson – Director of Ice Arena Operations, Neil Ladd – Director of Golf, Turf and Maintenance & Teri Vogt – Schwan’s USA CUP Tournament Director/Land Sports Director

Learn how to maximize the use of your facilities, and especially how to keep your business going during seasonal low-attendance periods. For example, the NSC is able to generate interest in multiple sports through hockey and soccer tournaments and by having fundraisers at the golf course. You will learn how to create a win/win situation.
